I have a bittersweet relationship with horror movies. On the one hand, I thoroughly enjoyed watching movies. But at the same time, I knew I’d have nightmares about them for several days. And though a bit embarrassing, I don’t turn off the lights, even during the day, or while sleeping, to counter my fears.
That said, I always watched horror movies with my friends or family. And, I’d advise you to do the same because the movies I’m going to share will give you some terrifying scares. Though these movies have always slipped under the radar, I bet they’ll make your skin crawl.
Also, it’s an injustice to watch horror movies with a disrupted and spotty connection. And while you’ll be ready for a jump scare, you wouldn’t want buffering to ruin the fun. For that reason, fix your internet if it isn’t already. If you’re looking for one, you can check Xfinity Internet. I’ve recently subscribed to this fiber connection, which offers symmetrical speeds and it keeps buffering at bay when streaming movies.
Now, let’s get started:
The Blackcoat’s Daughter
Release Date: 2015
Run Time: 1h 33m
Is it just me, or do you also feel that boarding schools are possessed by some kind of satanic spirits? Those long hallways with flickering lights always tell that something’s wrong with the place.
Anyway, The Blackcoat’s Daughter movie starts at a Catholic boarding school in New York where two girls, Kat and Rose, are left stranded during the winter break. All they have are two older nuns to look after them.
I won’t spoil this movie by going into the details. But watch out for Kat, she’s the shady one. Other than these two girls, there’s another one, Joan, played by Emma Roberts.
Additionally, there’s an alternative timeline featuring Joan, who escapes from a psychiatric hospital and is later picked up by a man named Bill and his wife.
It almost feels that it was intentional from the directors to leave it to the viewers’ imaginations to connect both timelines. Anyway, we can disagree on this movie’s ending, but one thing is guaranteed that The Blackcoat’s Daughter will give shivers down your spine.
Cure
Release Date: 1997
Run Time: 1h 55m
I know, most people don’t consider psychological horror as truly scary like The Exorcist or Paranormal Activity. But, don’t you think that the human mind can be frightening, even more than ghosts and spirits sometimes?
Cure is a psychological horror movie that revolves around a set of murders in Tokyo. An agent is put to work to unravel the mystery, but his mind is boggled when he witnesses an “X” drawn on the victims’ throats.
Though weary and tired from investigating this killer who disappears in thin air, his mentally challenged wife becomes an additional headache. The agent gets help from a former psychology student, who makes some breakthroughs in their search for the killer.
But what happens in between their investigations and after catching the killer, unfolds the dark and destructive tricks a human mind can play. All in all, you won’t see any ghosts or spirits. But even then, Cure will make your skin crawl, for sure.
Eli
Release Date: 2019
Run Time: 1h 38m
The movie is named after an 11-year-old who’s physically sick to the core. The poor little boy’s immune system gets weaker by the day, and he’s forced to wear an astronaut’s suit so that he doesn’t breathe in an impure environment.
As a last resort, Eli’s parents take him to Dr. Hill, who claims to have the exact remedy to Eli’s unknown illness. Dr. Hill runs a so-called healthcare facility, which was initially a spooky house into. Having no option but to trust Dr. Hill, Eli’s parents admit him there, and that’s when the spooky chain of events starts.
Besides Dr. Hill’s unconventional ways of treating his patients, including torture, Eli experiences supernatural forces around him. Also, including Eli, most people are sure if those “forces” try to hurt or warn him about something.
Also, watch out for how Eli’s misery ends, you won’t be disappointed after watching this movie.
Don’t Move
Release Date: 2024
Run Time: 1h 32m
Don’t Move revolves around the story of a grieving mother, Iris. Her son accidentally fell off a cliff and died. Feeling deranged after her son’s untimely death, she decides to take her life by jumping off from the same spot.
But, at that exact moment, a seemingly nice stranger, Richard, explains why it’s the worst decision, and eventually talks her out of it. Till this point, Ricard feels like a nice, caring, and empathetic guy. But, as soon as they leave the forest, Richard injects a drug that completely halts Iris’ nervous system.
The movie naturally picks up from that moment. In her attempts to escape, Iris finds out some really scary truths about Richard. All in all, it’s a must-watch horror movie that’ll keep you hooked till the very last scene.
So, these are four horror movies that’d likely make you feel terrorized (and give nightmares!). Also, if you want a suggestion on which one to start with, I suggest Cure. The storyline is so twisted and scary, which I believe is perfect to prepare you for the rest of the movies on this list.
