Here are some of the most popular and scenic routes for cycling in Leh Ladakh:

    1. Manali to Leh

This is the most famous route for cycling in Ladakh. It’s around 470 km long and takes 10–15 days, depending on your pace. You will pass through some of the most high altitude mountain passes like Rohtang Pass (3,980 m), Baralacha La (4,890 m), Nakee La (4,739 m), Lachung La (5,059 m), and Tanglang La (5,328 m).

You will also be passing through the famous Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal and the Gata Loops, well known for their 21 hair-pin like bends and Morey Plains- a 40km stretch of the most smoothest road in India. This route is challenging but absolutely beautiful. It is perfect for those looking for a serious challenge.

    2. Leh to Khardung La

Khardung La is one of the highest motorable roads in the world at 5,359 meters. This route is about 40 km one way. It is a short route but steep and can be challenging in terms of thin air and a steep climb. Many cyclists dream of reaching the top of Khardung La. This is a must-ride during your cycling in Leh Ladakh adventure.

    3. Leh to Pangong Lake

This ride again has some of the most scenic views and you are rewarded with the view of the mesmerising blue/green waters of Pangong Lake. It is around 160 km from Leh. The road passes through Chang La (5,360 m), another high mountain pass.

    4. Leh to Nubra Valley

This is a beautiful ride that will take you through mountains, rivers, and desert-like areas. Nubra Valley is around 120 km from Leh.  You will again pass through Khardung La on this route. The valley is known for its unique cold desert-like landscapes with sand dunes, double-humped bactrian camels, and remote Ladakhi villages.

Routes to Reach Leh by Cycle

If you’re planning a cycle trip to Ladakh, choosing the right route can shape your entire experience. Here are the three most popular routes to reach Leh by bicycle:

    1. Manali to Leh Route (Approx. 470 km)

This is the most adventurous and challenging route for cycling in Ladakh. It takes you across five major high-altitude passes including Rohtang La, Baralacha La, and Tanglang La. The landscape changes dramatically every day — from lush green valleys to barren mountain deserts. It usually takes 10–15 days to complete, and the route requires good stamina and proper acclimatization.

    2. Srinagar to Leh Route (Approx. 420 km)

This route is slightly easier in terms of altitude gain, making it a good choice for those new to high-altitude cycling. It starts in Srinagar and climbs gently through Sonamarg and the stunning Zojila Pass. You’ll pass through Kargil and ancient monasteries along the way. This route is rich in culture and history, and the gradual ascent helps your body adjust to the thin air more smoothly.

    3. Spiti to Leh Route (Approx. 550 km)

Perfect for those looking for offbeat adventure, the Spiti to Leh route is remote, less explored, and incredibly scenic. Starting from Kaza in Spiti Valley, you’ll ride through some of the least populated regions in the Himalayas. The terrain is rough, and facilities are few, but the solitude and beauty make it unforgettable. This route is recommended only for experienced cyclists who have trained themselves for months if not years.

Best Time for Cycling in Ladakh

The best time for cycling in Ladakh is from June to September. During these months, the weather is pleasant, roads are open, and ideal for cycling.

It is best to avoid the monsoon season (late July in lower regions) and winter (October to May) as the roads can be closed due to snow or landslides.

Tips for a Successful Ladakh Cycle Trip

A cycle trip to Ladakh is not easy. You need to be prepared both physically and mentally. Here are some simple tips to help you:

    1. Train Before the Trip

Start cycling regularly at least 2 months before the trip. Focus on building your stamina, leg strength, and long-distance rides.

    2. Acclimatize in Leh

Spend at least 2–3 days in Leh before starting your Ladakh cycle tour. This helps your body adjust to the high altitude and avoid AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).

    3. Carry the Right Gear

Pack light but smart. Must-have items include:

    • A strong mountain bike (with gears and disc brakes)

    • Helmet, gloves, and padded shorts

    • Repair kit, pump, spare tubes

    • Warm clothes and rain jacket

    • Reusable water bottle and energy bars

    4. Stay Hydrated

Drink water often. In high altitudes, dehydration happens quickly, even if you don’t feel sweaty.

    5. Know the Route

Plan your route and stops in advance. Mobile networks may not work in many areas. Keep offline maps and a printed plan.

    6. Respect Local Culture

Ladakh is a peaceful place with kind people. Dress modestly, greet locals, and avoid loud behavior.
