You have a home with steps leading up to the front door, and you find yourself thinking about railings.

These are a great addition to the outside of any home, adding class and interesting appeal that few other features have. With a range of choices and safety features, railings are more popular than ever, and here, you will be guided through exactly what you need to do when choosing the right ones for your home.

    Material

Metal is still one of the most popular materials used to make railings, but many homeowners now want something a bit more varied. You can now get aluminium railing systems, tempered glass, wooden, and even combination railings.

Many people opt for the material that they feel matches their home, so they aim to match as much as possible. Stainless steel is contemporary, wood is warmer, and wrought iron is classic.

    Design

When asked to mentally picture railings for the outside of a home, most people will think about something like black, gothic wrought iron. This is ideal if you have a gothic or boho-themed interior, but there are other designs.

You can get sleek designs, asymmetrical designs, and of course, older designs (like the swirly railings) mixed with more modern features, such as lighting or even built-in cameras.

    Safety

When you are having railings fitted, you should make sure that they are installed by a professional and that the railings themselves are safe. Keep an eye out for the Residential Stair Railing Code on the website of any railings you choose.

It is also worth looking at the reviews of the company and installer, just to get an overview of how they treat clients and how long their installations last.

    Budget

Metal or external railings were once associated with the largest townhouses, putting them in a price category that few could afford. However, thanks to machine manufacturing, they are now more affordable and can be installed at minimal cost. Of course, you should keep an eye on your budget and always ask any installer about the costs of the railings, the fittings, and any maintenance materials or sprays that may be needed.

    Maintenance

When it comes to railings for any structure, whether it is residential or commercial, you need to make sure that you are able to maintain them.

It may not seem like metal railings will need a lot of maintenance, but if you live in an area with unpredictable weather patterns or lots of rain, the heat and the damp can cause rust to form. So, many people opt to repaint their railings every six months with a weatherproof paint. For wooden railings, varnish, and for all railings, make sure they are clean and secure.

Remember, you will want something bold that matches your home, while also making sure you can look after it. As the average life span of stainless steel railings is 50-100 years, you should choose the design wisely and make sure it is installed correctly.
